The UK - the ‘workhorse’ of the European Union?
Britons are working longer hours than all their EU counterparts apart from those in Ireland, according to new research. ‘Still at Work?’ by Dr Marc Cowling and Natalie Turner at The Work Foundation, looks at the extent of long hours worked across Europe, and how Britons compare to other EU members. In the UK, almost 900,000 men and 500,000 women regularly work more than 60 hours per week. What is of particular interest is the culture of long hours, the concept of 'presenteeism' (people spending ever longer hours at their place of work because they think it is expected - if not productive) and the fact that long hours are increasingly acceptable to EU employers and employees. Roles that 'attract' the highest proportion of long hours workers across the EU are - for men - administrators, skilled manual and salesmen; and for women, legislators (senior administrators and middle managers in the public and private sectors) and skilled manual workers. One in five male administrators and skilled manual workers now work in excess of 60 hours per week. Industry sector is also critical – with men who work long hours being found in hotel and catering and transport and communications; while for women, working in agriculture leads to putting in the most hours, with only the hotel and catering sector coming close.

TV teaches one in four adults how to eat healthily
Jamie Oliver's campaign to improve the quality of school dinners has had a dramatic effect on the eating habits of adults. Following the success of Channel 4's ‘Jamie's School Dinners’, and the ensuing public debate on healthy eating, people's attitudes to nutrition have changed, according to research by medical insurer PruHealth. Some 28% of the 1,543 people questioned claimed the series had made them think more about the quality of meals they prepared. Around 23% said they now made more effort to find out about nutritious foods, and the same number had stopped buying some unhealthy items. The research showed that 19% of people had changed their weekly shopping habits to buy healthier foods, while 20% said they were spending more money on nutritious foods for themselves or their families.
